Boynton Beach
A coastal city between Delray and Lake Worth with a working marina, an ocean inlet, and neighborhoods that run from the beach to the edge of the Loxahatchee refuge.
The local’s take
Boynton Beach, as I see it
Boynton Beach stretches from the Atlantic all the way to the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, which means you can watch boats come through the Boynton Inlet in the morning and see wading birds on the boardwalk at Green Cay in the afternoon without leaving town. The city itself is centered on Ocean Avenue and the marina district by the Intracoastal, where downtown has been rebuilt over the last several years around Town Square and the restored old high school.
Most of the housing sits along the Congress Avenue, Woolbright Road, Boynton Beach Boulevard, and Gateway Boulevard corridors, and then out past the Turnpike where newer communities went up on former farmland. People sometimes use Boynton as shorthand for 'more house for the money than Delray,' and there's truth in that, but I think of it as a city with a lot of different kinds of streets, from canal-front homes near the inlet to the big lakefront subdivisions west of Jog Road.
The eastern part of the city, between Federal Highway and the Intracoastal, has older homes on larger lots, a handful of waterfront condo buildings, and a quick drive to Oceanfront Park. West of I-95 is where you'll find the pools-and-sidewalks neighborhoods, and the farther west you go, the newer and larger the homes tend to be.
Living here
What daily life in Boynton Beach looks like
- Lifestyle
- Oceanfront Park's guarded beach, dive and fishing charters out of Boynton Harbor Marina, Intracoastal Park, the Green Cay Nature Center and nearby Wakodahatchee Wetlands boardwalks, Renaissance Commons shopping, and weekend events in the downtown Town Square district.
- Housing types
- Mid-century single-family homes and waterfront condos east of Federal Highway; ranch homes and townhomes from the 1970s through 90s along Congress Avenue; large HOA communities west of Jog Road and the Turnpike (the Canyon neighborhoods, Valencia, and others), some of which are communities that operate as 55-and-over housing. New construction continues west along Boynton Beach Boulevard.
- HOA landscape
- East Boynton is largely non-HOA. Nearly everything west of Congress Avenue is deed-restricted, and the communities west of the Turnpike have substantial HOAs covering gates, landscaping, and clubhouses. Dues and rules vary widely; I'll pull the budget and rules for any community on your list.
- Getting around
- I-95 at Boynton Beach Boulevard, Woolbright Road, and Gateway Boulevard; Florida's Turnpike at Boynton Beach Boulevard; Tri-Rail at the Boynton Beach station. Downtown West Palm Beach and President Donald J. Trump International Airport (formerly Palm Beach International) are to the north, Boca Raton to the south.
- Schools
- School assignments in Palm Beach County are set by address, and boundaries change. Use the School District of Palm Beach County’s official lookup to see which schools serve a specific home; I don’t publish ratings, and I’ll always point you to the source.
